STROKE DEVELOPMENT GROUPS (12-years-old and younger)
 

Stroke Development Level 1 

This group is for swimmers ages 12 and under who have no competitive swimming experience. The focus of this practice group is to develop the swimmer’s stroke skills (free style and backstroke) and their enthusiasm for swimming. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards backstroke and 25 yards freestyle without assistance to start in this group.

Group Objective: (Fundamental Part 1)

 

  • To begin teaching rough base technique, coordination and speed for each stroke (ABC’s); and,
  • To continue to instill the importance of daily play and physical activity.
     

Group Criteria:

Minimum requirement to join this group:

Backstroke & Freestyle

  • 25 yards kicking on back holding streamline;
  • 25 yards backstroke;
  • 25 freestyle; 
  • 5 - 10 yards underwater; and,
  • Tumble head-over-heels/front flip or somersault without assistance.

Required Equipments:

  1. Junior Team kickboard
  2. Short fins (Zoomer): SWITCHBLADE FIN, Biofuse fins (preferred) or Trialon rubber swim fins
  3. Mesh Bag
     

Stroke Development Level 2 

This group is for athletes 12-years-old and under who have had some or no competitive swimming experience and would like to continue to refine their swimming skills. Swimmers have already learned the basics of Freestyle, backstroke, and Flip turns. They will learn a breaststroke, starts and underwater butterfly kick.

Group Objective: (Fundamental Part 1)

Group Criteria:

Minimum requirement to join this group:

Backstroke

  • 50 yard Backstroke with flip turn;
  • Backstroke flip turn; and,
  • 3 different Backstroke drill (one arm, double arm and holding 5” L position +3 strokes).

Freestyle

  • 50 yards freestyle with flip turn;
  • Flip turn;
  •  One arm drill: holding one arm over head and one arm on side; and
  • 4+4 drill.

​Dive

  • From deck (knee on the ground, hands-entry first).

Underwater

  • 10 yards underwater streamline free kick.

Butterfly Kick

  • Complete successfully 25 yards butterfly kick with kick board.


Meet:

  • Have competed successfully during the current swimming season in one of the following events: 50 yard backstroke, 50 yard freestyle (must be a USA swimming-sanctioned meet).
     

Required Equipment:

  1. Junior Speedo Bullet Snorkel
  2. Junior Team kickboard
  3. Short fins (Zoomer): SWITCHBLADE FIN, Biofuse fins (preferred) or Trialon rubber swim fins
  4. Mesh Bag
     

Stroke Development Level 3 

This training group is for young swimmers who are ready to learn more advanced stroke techniques. Other activities besides swimming are still strongly encouraged. Swimmers compete in swim meets, particularly inter-squad and USA swimming events.

Freestyle

  • 50 Freestyle with Flip turn and 2-4 fly kick under water

Breaststroke

  • 25 yards Breaststroke kick without board;
  • 25 Yards Breaststroke swim (timing breathing-pull-kick); and,
  • Breaststroke pullout.

Butterfly

  • 25 fly kicks on back and front; and,
  • 100 kick for time <2’00.

Dive from block

  • Track start and grab start

Underwater

  •  25 yards Butterfly kick (first 10-15 yards underwater streamline fly kick)

Meet:

  • Have competed successfully during the current swimming season in two of the following events: 50 yard Backstroke, 50 yard Freestyle, 50 Breaststroke (must be a USA swimming-sanctioned meet)
     

Required Equipments:

  1. Junior Speedo Bullet Snorkel
  2. Junior Team kickboard
  3. Short fins (Zoomer): SWITCHBLADE FIN, Biofuse fins (preferred) or Trialon rubber swim fins

Stroke development Level 4

This is the last step of our stroke development. In this group, they will polish their stroke mechanics and will start learning the concept of training (swimming small sets with all 4 strokes while learning how to use a pace clock for interval training). They will finish their stroke development by learning how to swim the individual medley correctly.

The time-frame expectation to move from this group to Age Group (the next practice group) is between 4 to 8 months if they have 100% of attendance. O
ther activities besides swimming is still strongly encouraged. Swimmers compete in swim meets, particularly inter-squad and USA swimming events. Swimmers in this level are 12-years-old and younger.
